So recently I’ve been trying to get my ass out of the house more often. On my day off I’ve been walking around different walkable parts of new york and new jersey, penjamin in hand, exploring. If you’ve ever been in a metropolitan area you know that there’s spectacular food options all over the place, and good enough junk food and junk shops that you can make an afternoon out of it. I’ve really taken to buying new cassette releases, which I’m lucky enough to do in person at places like rough trade and nexus records (called material world in every single place online but I’ve been informed by a dude who looks exactly like lester from skate or die that its the old name from a business they bought out and they’re working on getting it changed). The thing is about cassettes is that no one gives a shit about them. There’s no nostalgia. Next to no one makes them on any level besides very small bands who have been priced out of the vinyl market. Because of that, every new tape selection, which to be honest might just be those two places, is wall to wall insane people and wierdos. You’re more likely to accidentally buy someone’s blackened noise ep that only had ten copies made for a few dollars than you are an alternative band. So I literally go into these places and eenie minie moe it. Like. Choose things based on the name or price. Some of these cost a dollar so even if its one song and its insane garbage I can at least enjoy it as much as a twix or something.
Some of these are so obscure I can barely find anything about them. Like maybe one webpage mentioning that the tape exists, or weirdly enough some of the punk ones get their concerts written up in maximum rock and roll. So I figured I’ll give some basic exposure to them on my little hovel of a website. Its not going to be very in depth, just that they exist and what I thought.
